Last weekend turned out to be a great one thanks to back to back wonderful kutcheris (each lasting some 2-hour 45-minutes!) on Saturday and Sunday ๐Ÿ™‚

I had been eagerly waiting to listen to a Kedaragowlai (one of my most favourite raagams ๐Ÿ™‚ ) for a long time now and little did I expect him to sing it yesterday after the Todi main piece. By the way, I liked TMK’s Todi very much yesterday! See how I am saying this about Todi in contrast to what I said in my earlier post. ๐Ÿ˜‰

My favourites in yesterday’s concert: Reetigowlai varnam, Kamakshi, Kedaragowlai RTP, Khamas and of course, Sahana!! ๐Ÿ˜€ It felt great listening to TMK’s Sahana after a long time!

With a great team performing together, it was yet another wonderful concert. TMK, Umayalpuram Sivaraman & Shriramkumar are the one of the best combinations ever!

A good concert. The Pallavi was a bit short though. But, can’t talk much about this as I am yet to come out of the fantastic feeling after attending an extraordinary TNS kutcheri yesterday. The Shubhapanthuvarali, well, only he can sing like that! Divine.

    Hello Aparna,
Just for info, Shri TNS sang at Sivagami Pethachi Hall on Monday from 7:00 PM to 9:45 PM(roughly). Accompanists were Shri MA Sundareswaran on the violin, Shri Umayalpuram K Sivaraman on the Mrudangam and Shri Sree Sundar Kumar on the Kanjira.

    Hi Aparna,,
I was quite amused te read your enthusiastic exclamation about the two concerts you attended: “each lasting some 2-hour 45-minutes!”. Of course, in Chennai, at the Music Academy, for example, even senior artists are alloted only Two and a half hours. But here in the USA, we expect musicians to give us a 3 1/2 to 4 hour concert. The rasikas would be very upset if the concert lasted only three hours. At a concert arranged by Sruti in Pennsylvania, T M Krishna gave a 4 hour and 15 minute concert, with a heavenly Bhairavi RTP that lasted nearly an hour. The record, however, is held by Sudha Raghunathan a few years ago, when she sang for CMANA at the Lucy Stone Auditorium, Rutgers University, NJ, for six hours, with no break. And Sheshagopalan gave a 4 1/2 hour concert at CMANA’s 25th anniversary. Why can’t the big sabhas in Chennai give the artists four hours to sing as they used to do in old days, when MS and Mani Iyer sang for four hours?
    Just a thought, of course.

    Yesh Prabhu,
Considering the number of artistes and the number of concerts happening in the city, maybe the organizers feel they can’t allot a 3-hr slot to every musician….

    >heavenly Bhairavi RTP that lasted nearly an hour
    Wow!
