Kharaharapriya all the way!

Today, I got the recording of a concert of Sanjay Subrahmanyan held on 30th July, 2002 at SVN Music Academy, Bangalore. It had a 1-hour 5-minutes RTP in Kharaharapriya sung by Sanjay! What more can you ask for! In the RTP, he has sung the Pallavi ‘rAma nI samAna’ in raagas Kanada, Salaka Bhairavi, Darbar and Siva Ranjani. It’s too good! Sanjay had sung Raga Sudha Rasa in that concert. A 4-minute alapana of Andolika followed by the song is awesome! Can’t stop listening to it! (I am listening to T.M.Krishna’s and Sanjay’s Raga Sudha Rasa alternately now!) I am yet to listen to other songs in that.

Incidentally, today has been a day full of Kharaharapriya!
I listened to Chakkani Raja sung by Sri Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, then, another 1-hour RTP in Kharaharapriya sung by Vedavalli and above all, the song I am learning now is Chakkani Raja! πŸ™‚

    Aparna,
Kharaharapriya is an excellent raaga and Chakkani Raja and Raama Nee Samaanamevaru are two brilliant krithis.

The Pallavi of Chakkani Raja has around 9-10 aavarthas, the most beautiful part of this krithi and I love singing it. It gives you ample scope to explore the raaga in the beginning of the krithi itself. On the whole I love it!

Rama Nee Samaanamevaru is something which you should learn hand in hand if you havent learnt it before. The way Sri Thyagaraja asks Samaanamevaru, Nee Samaanamevaru, Raama Nee Samaanamevaru is something very divine.

All the best. Let me try to get this recording too. You have sown the seed of temptation in me! πŸ˜‰

Chembai was famed for his renditions of Rama Neeyada and Pakkala Nilabadi (both Karaharapriya). There is even a HMV album of his that contains Rama Neeyada.

The Song ” Chakkani Raja” always reminds me of Semmangudi. He was brilliant in rendering it .
