While I am not a big fan of his, I have to admit some of the songs of his are pretty good. My fav bit is in Kandukonden Kandukonden[? - the one with Mamooty, Ajit, Aishwarya Rai and one other female who's name I cant remember ...], there is a song called Sandhana Thenrali …the song itself is OK, but there is a flute bit in between the Anupallavi and Charanam. It jst lasts about 30 seconds but some mesmerising Bhairavi in it!!
Mahesh,
I am not sure if obsessed is the right word. Can’t describe the effect Rahman’s music has on me
The other actress in the movie is Tabu. Yeah, that’s one of the best flute interlude! Do listen to the song ‘Kannamoochi’ from the same movie if you haven’t. It’s a wonderful composition based on raagas Sahana and Nattakurunji. The violin interlude in the song is too good.
Adiya,
Enga oru last two-three comments just oru smileyaa illaama irundhudhennu paatthaen. Resumed again?
Bharath,
Oh I have no idea about all that. Thanks for the info
Yeah I have listened to the Sahana / Nata Kurinji song. Pretty nice. Two other songs come to mind.
Narumugaye – Iruvar [?] – The one with Mohanlal
Katre En – Don’t know movie name, Arjun and Jyothika – a superb Darbari Kanda. Though the female singer is so obviously North-Indian and mashes up the song. A pity ARR didn’t make somone who understants and pronounces Tamil properly sing the song.
Oh, interludes, in teh movie Roja, someof the back ground music is in Raga Desh, very very subtle and sublime. I watched the movie recently just to hear the back ground music!! Though the master of BGM in situation is Ilayaraja. He’s the bossman
Mahesh,
So you also enjoy Rahman’s music?
Katre En from the movie Rhythm was sung by Kavitha Krishnamurthy, a Tamilian. But, her voice isn’t as good as it used to be long time back. Maybe thats why you feel she hasn’t sung it well….
BGM of Roja is one of Rahman’s best
You needn’t apologize. I just though that word wasn’t apt. nothing else
A R Rahman’s and Carnatic music are the ones that means the most to me
Now I know why the desktop is there..:) i dint get to watch ooo laaa llaaa on Sunday but just got to watch the youtube videos…..so amny new information about the genious …the BOSS of music.. a trivia just in case you hadnt known before… ARR’s recent addition to his equipment is the Continuum keyboard which he introduced during his recent US programs… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuum_%28instrument%29
>> Katre En from the movie Rhythm was sung by Kavitha Krishnamurthy, a >> Tamilian.
It’s not the voice, it’s the pronounciation of the words. I managed to hear the song online and it says the singer is Kavita Paduval not Kavita Krishnamurthy Seems right to me as a Tamilian would *never* [atelast I think and *hope*, please pretty please don't murder the language of Bharathi ...], pronounce the word “Nirkum” in the way KP does. Unni as usual is picture perfect.
And yes, I do hear ARR, any good music, I am into, though I rarely go out of my way .. sometimes it’s just impossible *not* to hear some film music. And as ever it sticks.
A few months ago I saw a absolutely mental movie called “Whatever” [can't remember the name as usual]. The hero had multiple-personality dis-order or something like that …there is a song which goes “Kumari kumari”. The Bilahari in it is worth listening to …Apart from that, the movie was so bad I had to treat it like a comedy and had a good laugh. The way they copied The Matrix stunt scenes was too much. And it was done badly, very badly. You’d understand if you have seen the original Matrix movies. Last but not the least, one thing that stood out as a plesant experience was the heroine. She looked stunning and made the movie a bit more aesthetically palatable
OK, figured the movie out with the help of my sister who knows all this stuff.
The movie is called Anniyan. The song is Oh Suhkumari. Harini and Shankar Mahadevan sing the song. Harris Jayaraj scored the music. You can hear it from the following link.
It’s a combination of Mohanam and Bilarhari and a few other ragas here and there which happens in film songs a lot. Is the music director any way connected with Deva? The song is very similar the dappanguthhu song “Velareikai pinju velarikka” which again is Mohanam. Kadhal Kottai or some such movie where have this bizarre phone / letter love!! I despair for the latest Indian movies
Mahesh,
Kaatre En was sung by Kavitha Krishnamurthy. No doubt about that. I don’t think her pronunciation is bad. Only thing is her voice sounds very strained when she reaches higher pitch.
I don’t like Anniyan and the Kumari song too. Isn’t it based on Sama? Very much similar to the krithi, Annapoorne. The music director is Harris Jeyaraj and most of the times his music will be inspired by many other MDs music like Deva’s used to be
Santhosh,

Hey Janani… Prob u r a beginner in music… Well, all above accusations abt ARR regarding beats… All dese are COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE LOOPS AND SAMPLES, and they are used by the BIGGEST COMPOSERS around d world… Only BIG COMPOSERS like JAMES HORNER, HANZ ZIMMER, ENNIO MORRICONE and ARR know to use these commercially available samples to perfection..
LAKHS of EUROS are paid, and these commercially available samples come in CDs, and are purchased by the BIG COMPOSERS of the globe….
ARR also makes such samples and SELL them….

Rahman saab ki jai…… awesome composer….. I would say he is a scientist in music….. every composition of his amuses me…. the way he blends the genres to creat his own new genre….. the way he messes up with sound to create a new sound…. the way he makes the conventional design of songs extra ordinary….. he is amazing…..he has some direct connection with heaven…. and the music seems to keep flowing…pouring….. hats off to this great man of music
